About

A person wearing a cap, glasses, and earrings is cooking or preparing food in a kitchen, using a spoon or spatula.

“Authentic” is a word often attached to food,

but there are two very different definitions.

(At Yellow Ranger, we like the first version better than the second.)

1. True to one's own personality, spirit, or character.

  • Creates something new

  • Reflects an individual viewpoint

  • Diversity of ideas

  • Encourages differences of opinion

  • Many reference points

  • Breaks the rules

  • For anyone

  • Inclusionary

2. Made or done in the traditional or original way, or in a way that faithfully resembles the original.

  • Recreates something existing

  • Reflects a collective viewpoint

  • Homogenization of ideas

  • Encourages conformity

  • One “original” reference point

  • Follows the rules

  • For those that already “get it”

  • Exclusionary

We’re doing things differently.

Our food is a genuine expression of our unique perspective.

You can check your expectations at the door.

We can’t wait to serve you.

Our Way.”

FAQ

  • Yellow Ranger serves American+Chinese bar food inside your favorite neighborhood dive bars.  We wanted to create a quirky, vibey, and unpretentious yet entirely memorable bar/restaurant.  The kind of spot you invite your visiting friends to show them what Austin is all about.  The kind of spot you can feel just as comfortable on a laid back date night as you can shooting a game of darts or pool with friends after work.  The kind of spot we miss seeing all over Austin, and the kind of spot folks are still moving here looking for.

  • We have two convenient locations:

North Loop, inside The Golden Horn at 5420 Airport Blvd

    and

North Austin, inside The Hideout Pub at 12164 N Mopac Expressway.

  • North Loop/Golden Horn location: 12pm - 1am DAILY

    North Austin/Hideout Pub location: 3pm - 12am DAILY

  • Our restaurant is small and fiercely independent.  We started this with way more passion than startup funds because we believe that our community can and will support us without meddling investors or crippling bank loans.  Every plate we sell is a gesture of love: love for our employees, for the cuisine, for the ingredients, for the farmers, for the guests.  We treat our employees the best we possibly can.  We don’t waste food, but instead use our cheffy skills to transform it into other delicious stuff.  We are a small team that finds joy in every aspect of what we do.  We hope this energy translates into a truly excellent and memorable experience for y’all.  We hope that your support makes our small business sustainably successful.

  • Yes.  Yep.  Oui, Chef.  We have tons of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options! Please, please, please let us know about any serious food allergies so we can take the extra steps to keep you safe.

  • Gluten-free, yes! Half of our menu is naturally gluten-free.

Celiac, not so much, unfortunately. The problem child here is our Shaoxing wine, which we use liberally as a core part of our seasoning. Although Shaoxing wine is made from rice and no wheat products are added, the yeast used to ferment the wine is derived from a wheat-based starter. If you have celiac disease, let us know at the restaurant so we can take care of you properly.

  • The Golden Horn and The Hideout Pub are neighborhood cocktail dives brought to you by the same talented folks behind Barfly’s, Violet Crown Social Club, Bender Bar, and Pourhouse Pints & Pies.  We are friends and collaborators with Golden Horn/Hideout and share our dining space, but we are separate companies.

  • Grab a drink from the bar, pick a spot to chill and scan the QR code on your table to see our menu and place an order.

Not a fan of QR codes? No problem! We’d love to take your order in person at the Yellow Ranger kiosk.

  • We are walk-in only!

  • Please reach out to Hello@yellowrangeratx.com with any venue buyout or special event requests! Catering inquiries may be made online through the form under the Catering tab.

  • Well behaved kiddos are welcome before 10pm!  After 10pm, we politely decline all underage guests for safety reasons as well as for the comfort of our late night bar crowd.

  • Well trained dogs are more than welcome on our covered patios!  You can order food directly from the QR codes outside and we will bring it out to y’all!

  • We offer free lot parking and plenty of nearby street parking.

  • Our core menu is available through Toast online ordering HERE. Simply place your order, arrive at the restaurant at your scheduled pickup time, and give us your name at the bar.

  • We’d love to offer delivery someday if we can figure out how to do it ourselves.  The truth is, we can’t stand greedy, exploitative third party companies like UberEats or DoorDash.  They take a massive cut of our already tiny profit margin, they treat their drivers horribly, and their apps are glitchy and difficult to manage.  Your food can get lost or damaged and we can’t do much to fix it or might never even find out about the issue!  If y’all want to pay tons of fees to get cold, soggy slop thrown onto your porch, order from somewhere else.  If y’all want to have awesome food served to you with love, come see us at the restaurant.

  • Hell yeah we do. We don't use MSG in every dish, but it definitely appears here and there throughout our menu. Why? Because it's crazy delicious and totally not bad for you. We could go on a long-winded rant about how "MSG is harmful" is a completely fabricated myth rooted in racism, but y'all can just Google it and see for yourself. Feel free to chat with us in person about MSG. If you're adamant about avoiding it, we can steer you to the dishes without it.
